The Grand Opening

[A large WELCOME sign is hanging from the buildings when you walk into Levanta Town, but that seems to be the only sign that today is any different than any other day. The villagers are simply going about their daily business. However, if they are approached they are more than happy to explain the region as well as they can to any new arrivals.

[Especially since he remembers you, Paul. Zorua's not so inclined to remember people who didn't matter in the long run, but the grumpy guy looks familiar enough to make him stop short and slam face-first into the grass.]

Zozo! Are you okay? [Yeah, 'course I am. Don't that guy seem familiar, or am I goin' mad? Replies the Zorua, licking his fur clean. N picks him up and tsks, glancing at where the fox's tail pointed and blinking. Whispers whispers between them.] ... I guess he does. There's not a lot of people with eyebrows like that, after all.

[Meanwhile the clean-slated Paul takes this opportunity to scan the Zorua, buuut...

... Of course. New region means I'll need a new Pokedex to identify anything around here.

[Time to glare at little N with those frightful eyebrows!]

What's that you're holding, kid?

[Man, none of his friends remember him.]

... Zorua. He's a Zorua, from Unova. [Gosh, what scary eyebrows. It kinda feels like they'll jump off his face and attack, right?

-- Sorry Paul but N is trying not to laugh at Zozo's remark.]

Unova, huh. That's halfway across the world... then how-

[Now he hears the laughing. What an annoying brat this is. But at least he's useful for information purposes.]

Stop pretending you can talk to that thing and tell me where you caught it. Something like that looks like it can evolve into a strong Pokemon.

[Wow you're rude. Zorua growls a little and N frowns a bit, holding the Pokémon tighter like Eyebrows was gonna take away his dear friend and shaking his head. Knowing him or not, this line of conversation only makes N think of one thing.]

I'm not pretending, and I won't tell you. Zozo says his kind are rare and sought after, and I don't want any of them getting hurt. Besides, I didn't catch him. I befriended him.

[Ah, he should've known better than to expect a little kid to actually cooperate.]

Well, you are too young to legally be a trainer. So that makes sense... if that Zorua is a popular species, there must be a good reason for it. You'll have a head start on the other beginners when you become a trainer.

I'm not becoming a trainer.

What, then? A breeder? Coordinator?

A hero. I'm going to save Pokémon from bad trainers and create a world where they're not trapped into something they don't want.

... Hmph.

[Delusional kid.]

[Totally serious. Look at this kid. He could not be more serious. Zorua's looking pretty serious too.]

... Not all trainers are bad, I think. [He had a talk a long, long time ago with a future self of his regarding this topic.] But there are many out there, and I don't want them to hurt my friends anymore. Some trainers are very kind to their friends, and some simply push too hard. Or think that their strength comes from how powerful their Pokémon are. I think. But I'm not going to let anything, or anyone, stop me.

[... some of these statements hit a little too close to home here.]

... You see me as a bad trainer, don't you?

[Nodding. That still hadn't changed, even if Paul doesn't remember that.]

Someone like you once told me that he did that, using Pokémon for strength and such, but he'd changed. He had a nice singing voice and his Pokémon seemed to like him, but I still didn't believe it very much. Humans lie more than they tell the truth.

[Now the similarities are getting downright creepy.]

We all have a reason for being the kind of people we are...

[Though Paul still lacks a reason for working with Pokemon to begin with; a matter that still clearly troubles him.]

[Zorua can tell that, and he's quick to nudge N's chin to it too. He's got issues, kid. Still got them, I mean.]

I don't suppose you know your reason?

Small children like you shouldn't assume such things about total strangers.

[Hit the nail on the head. Zorua grins and flicks his tail back in forth, wiggling out of N's arms and prancing around Paul. The yaps should sound mocking enough. Looks like the sock's on the other foot, jerk! We've got you right in the hot spot!]

Zozo notices things about humans more than I do, even if he's kind of mean about it. My reason is because I'm going to be a hero, so what's yours? [Look, friendlier. Even a little smile. Even if it's kind of... stilted. Not that he's stopping his Zorua.]

[That question still haunts him, and the fact that a little kid is owning him here is pretty humiliating.]

Being a hero is such a shallow goal.

[Ooooh Zorua's got a few choice words for you, Paul, but N's beat him to it.]

You say that because you don't know or understand why I'm going to be one. I doubt you could, anyway, if I told you. [Not many... understood, except for other hims. But that was a given.] At least I have a goal in mind.

You're just a kid. And you don't know anything about me.

[Oh Paul, if only you knew...]

[Sorry, but he's smiling now. It might seem a little... evil, depending on who's asking, but it's really just mocking.]

At least you're good at observing. [Too bad he ain't too bright. C'mon N, let's go play more, I'm bored of you draggin' him 'round like that. The Zorua hops back over to his human, glaring at Paul. Stupid trainer.] You're done checking out Zozo, right?

... As done as I can be with a Pokedex that has no data on the species.

All right then! [Look how friendly this kid is! He'll be going away now with his fox, but not before he turns around and waves. Walking backwards yup.]

It was nice seeing you again, Paul! Kind of, anyways!

[don't think he didn't catch that!]

[oh but it is the secrets that are the best part

unless Paul can catch their running forms nope he's not getting answers]
